Legends of Baseball, Cycling and Horse Racing

These programs look back on the careers of three men who change the face of their sport through a combination of sheer talent, determination and will. Despite having talents in three very different sports, they share a common legacy of being remembered as masters of their craft.

First, we remember the great jockey Lester Piggott, whose name is synonymous with the Derby, one of the biggest horse races in the world. Held at the famous Epsom racecourse, the Derby is a tradition that dates back more than 200 years and is a contest like no other in the world. As a nine time winner of this famous race, Piggott’s name is linked with this prestigious event more than any other and ears rightly remembered as one of the best flat racing jockeys of all time.

Then, there is the legendary Eddie Merck’s, perhaps the greatest cyclist to left. Merck’s completely dominated his sport from the mid-60s to the mid-70s, often trouncing his opposition with no help from others. His desire to win while competing in one of the most gruelling sports was astonishing. His mental strength never flagged, his heart was big and his legs were strong. He won 11 grand tours and three world Championships and is rightly regarded as a living legend.

Finally, we look at the career of the man known as the ‘Bambino’ and the ‘Sultan of Swa’t: Babe Ruth, the American baseball player who became famous for his hitting brilliance. In 1927 Ruth set a record for the number of home runs in one season with 60, a mark that stored for 34 years. His hitting prowess led the New York Yankees to 4 World Series titles and ears credited as playing a huge part in the boom in popularity baseball witnessed in the 1920s.
